Be Prepared for a Natural Disaster

With hurricane season upon us, it is important to guard your personal and tax records.  All too often these records get lost during natural disasters. Have a secure location for storage of your tax and important paper files. A good waterproof safe in your home is a great solution but that sometimes is not enough. Safes can blow away – even the heaviest of safes are not secure enough for a Cat 3-5 hurricane. Also, if the safe gets punctured, then you have issues of water damage or other people being able to breach the safe.


A good backup is to have the files stored off site at a bank or other location in a safe deposit box. The banks are usually secure enough to weather many storms. However, there is always the possibility of banks being destroyed in Cat 5 hurricanes. Even though the bank assumes responsibility for your items, they are not responsible for “acts of nature” which they have no control over.


For your household items, you can take photographs and store in a secure location. That way when you have a loss, you can provide the documentation to the insurance companies for reimbursement for your loss. This can be a very important thing to do since often in a loss you can’t remember everything that was on a shelf, or in a cabinet. There are also companies that will come in and video your home’s contents and store for you, as well as give you a copy. Good documentation is important for getting the reimbursement you deserve. Don’t forget your freeze as well, especially if you have just filled it with a side of beef, or a large frozen purchase.


The best option is to store your important papers digitally. This way they are “in the cloud” and you can recover at any time from any computer. Take the time to digitize all your important papers as well as important family photos and documents. You may be glad you did if your house is destroyed by hurricanes, tornados, or fire. Save several copies and store in different locations, Digitization has quickly become the best solution for making sure you do not loose any important paper items during a loss.  Taking the time to digitize your important items can be a relief should you lose these important photos or family papers, or mementos.
